Upgrading to Standard SKU Public IP Addresses in Azure

6 May, 2025 | Announces, Miscelanea

Microsoft Azure is implementing a significant change in its networking services: the retirement of Basic SKU public IP addresses by 30 September 2025. If you’re currently using Basic SKU public IP addresses, it’s time to plan and upgrade to Standard SKU public IP addresses to avoid disruptions and unlock enhanced features.

What’s Changing?

The Basic SKU public IP addresses, which have been a staple for many users, will no longer be supported after 30 September 2025. While you can continue to use existing Basic SKU public IPs until that date, new Basic SKU IPs can no longer be created starting 31 March 2025.

Deployments in Azure Cloud Services (extended support) are exempt from this change, so no action is needed for those specific cases.

Why Upgrade to Standard SKU?

The Standard SKU public IP addresses offer enhanced functionality and security, aligning with Azure’s evolving service standards. Key benefits include:

Broader Compatibility

Seamless integration with advanced Azure services like the Standard Load Balancer, Azure Firewall, and NAT Gateway.

Enhanced Security

Default security configurations block inbound traffic unless explicitly allowed via Network Security Groups (NSGs).

Zone-Redundancy

Robust resilience with zone-redundant and zonal front ends for reliable traffic handling across inbound and outbound channels.

What Do You Need to Do?

To ensure uninterrupted service, follow these steps:

Review Pricing

Familiarize yourself with the costs associated with Standard SKU public IP addresses.

Plan Your Upgrade

Transition your workloads and configurations to Standard SKU public IPs before 30 September 2025.

Leverage Azure Tools

Utilize Azure’s management tools to map and replace existing Basic SKU IPs.

Why Act Now?

Upgrading to Standard SKU public IP addresses not only ensures compliance with Azure’s roadmap but also enhances your infrastructure’s reliability and security. With these improvements, you’re better equipped to handle the growing demands of modern cloud applications.
